Nytko Motorsport recently participated in the 67th BEMC spring Trophy race weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park help on May 13-14 weekend We took part in the GT Challenge race which this time was a 3h endurance event. After a crash with the 944 turbo last year the decision was made to sell it as is and look for a new race car.

Earlier this spring we received a container with our race cars for 2017; a VW GTI COX RT (ex-GTI Japan cup car) and a Radical17052501b SR3RS. With the Radical needing, some attention the decision was made to run the GTI.

Friday was our first test day at CTMP with the car, the weather held up and we were eager to get some initial laps to get the car’s setup sorted out. With minor suspension adjustments, we got the car handling very well but it was evident the car was low on power with the stock 2.0 16v motor; in the end managing a 1:45 lap time we were going to run it in GT5 class. Later in the day it was time for tech inspection and getting the car log booked with CASC. All in all the process went smooth and we were ready for our race on Saturday.

Race day saw patchy weather, qualifying 3rd in GT5 and armed with a pit strategy we were ready for the 3 hour run. With the initial dry track and getting more familiar with the car the lap times came down with a best of 1:42.6. Shortly after the 1st hour mark the race went to a full course yellow due to an accident at turn 2.

The timing worked in our favour and our first refuel was under yellow. With race resuming and being now in 1st place in GT5 it was back to maintaining consistent lap times. 2nd refuel went smooth and we were quickly back on the track. About 30 min to the end the weather turned to rain, with the decision to stay out on slick we were losing our advantage to the 2nd placed car but the gamble paid off as we held on to our position. Could not be happier with the final result of 1st in GT5 and moving up 6 spots to a 7th place overall.

Big thanks to my crew chief Daniel Lei for the quick pit stops. Check out the Nytko Motorsport facebook page for more photos.
